  This week we discuss the 'technology cycle' and how the need to refresh a mobile platform every 5 years - something that is currently causing Nokia and RIM so much pain - will eventually come to Apple.
  
  It's not all bad news though… We think Apple is one of the few firms with the vision and experience to navigate this tricky process successfully.

  I really enjoyed this show guys and I must admit that I've yet to listen to the last 10 minutes or so, but I'm a tad confused about something.
  You mentioned that Apple will at some point, probably very shortly, have to move to another paradigm. I totally agree.
  But hasn't Apple already made it clear that it considers Siri to be exactly that?

  Sort-of. What we were saying was that within a few years Apple will need to do a complete re-fresh and upgrade of it's mobile OS. Typically they only last 5 years before they need to be updated wholesale.
  
  Sticking with an ageing OS for too long really hurts - witness Blackberry and Symbian.
  
  Siri could be key to the user experience, but what we're talking about is all the underlying stuff too.

  I believe that Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) is to be based on the old (circa 1993) Windows NT core, yet the user experience and services that it offers are likely to nothing like Windows NT.
  But yes, perhaps it soon will be time for Apple to start from scratch again. Perhaps they might actually get around to spending some of that cash whilst doing it?

  Guys, I absolutely love your podcasts. I haven't been listening that long (started in December 2011) but I've gone into your archives and listened to the lot on my way to and from work. I think you have a superb dynamic between the three of you, and there's a perfect mix and balance of piss-taking humour, even if most of the jokes are aimed at Rafe (he puts up with a lot!) and quality techy-geeky chat. I really enjoy listening - it's like Top Gear for mobile phones! Brilliant, please keep them going. Like Rafe I'm a huge Nokia fan, and right now have (and thoroughly love) the Nokia N9. Any chance you guys might be talking about that particular model and Nokia's plans on MeeGo in conjunction with Windows Phone? Anyway, just wanted to say Hi and let you know I thoroughly enjoy your hard work! As I said to Rafe a while ago on AllAboutSymbian, if you find yourself in NYC, I'll be the first to buy you a beer!   @James - Siri is only one component - it the sort of thing I was referring to when you can make things last longer (or appear fresh if you prefer) by being flexible / doing new stuff. If you were going to have a primarily Siri driven interface (itself unlikely I think), the UI would look very different to now (and much of the underlying architecture would be different too). I think one of the big hurdles that Apple faces is moving away from its skeuomorphism design language. It was / maybe still is what made the simple stand out, but in the longer term I think it can only be an anchor.

  @James: I think the bits of WP8 that use NT are pretty low-level and only part of the whole stack, but crucially the point is that if old code works then that's great - use it. The problem is when maintaining old code for legacy compatibility / lack of investment prevents you from developing cutting-edge devices.
